Report: 2020 Democrats Are Hypocrites When It Comes to Money in Politics

Decrying money in politics is a common Democratic trope. Nearly every national candidate in recent history has said they want to get money out of politics. And yet a new report from the Associated Press reveals that these promises “come with asterisks.”

In an effort to “appease a progressive Democratic Party base,” Democrats running for president have all pledged in some form or fashion to refuse to accept money from lobbyists, corporate political action committees, and other rich donors and interests who “wield too much influence over elections,” progressives say.

Here are just a few examples:

Bernie Sanders wants to crack down on outside groups that do political spending, though one is allied with his presidential campaign. Elizabeth Warren has vowed no untraceable “dark money” will help her White House bid, despite being backed by an organization that doesn’t disclose some of its donors. And Pete Buttigieg accepted lobbyist money — until he didn’t.

The list doesn’t stop there, though. Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) signed a “No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge.” But, the AP notes, O’Rourke did not mention that his 2018 Senate campaign against Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) “was one of the biggest recipients of contributions from the oil and gas sector.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden is no better. After promising he would not accept federal lobbyist money, his first campaign fundraiser “was held at the Philadelphia home of David L. Cohen, who oversees Comcast’s lobbying efforts in Washington.”

And the list goes on and on. Democrats have proven this cycle that the so-called progressive wing of the party is driving not only the debate but the actions of party leaders. It’s all a game of optics, and the problem for these Democrats is that none of them are hiding their big money games very well.
