REPORT: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Hell-Bent on Taking Out Hakeem Jeffries in 2020

Democratic socialist and Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has a top priority in 2020, and it has nothing to do with President Trump or legislating. Rather, she wants to find and publicly support a primary challenger to House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), according to a Politico story published on Tuesday.

Ocasio-Cortez is upset “that a campaign donation to her from Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) was allegedly used in a whisper campaign against Lee before her narrow loss to Jeffries in the recent race for Democratic caucus chair,” according to Politico.

“It’s personal for Ocasio,” a person with knowledge of the situation told Politico. “And she’s going to go all out to take him out.”

Politico’s anonymous sources also said that Jeffries’ seat is the “highest priority” primary target for Ocasio-Cortez.

Politico also reported that Ocasio-Cortez has already “recruited an African-American woman to challenge Jeffries.”

“We’re not looking at recruiting people to run campaigns, we’re looking at building a congressional staff,” Ocasio-Cortez spokesman Corbin Trent told Politico.

But Trent did say that Ocasio-Cortez was “disappointed in the way that the leadership elections went down, specifically that leadership election,” referring to Democratic caucus chair election.

Justice Democrats, a group that is supported by Ocasio-Cortez and is focused on boosting anti-incumbent Democratic challengers, is “looking” at Jeffries’ seat in 2020, according to a person with direct knowledge of Justice Democrats’ primary plans who also spoke with Politico on the condition of anonymity.
