REPORT: Biden Allies Are Very Worried About Beto

Allies to former Vice President Joe Biden are growing increasingly worried about the threat Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) would pose to Biden in the Democratic presidential primary if both men were to run, according to The Hill.

“If both of them run, and there’s a good chance they both will, I think it spells trouble for Biden,” one longtime aide to Biden told the Hill.

There are a number of reasons why Biden allies are worried about O’Rourke.

According to the Hill:

“The biggest is that O’Rourke appeals to former President Obama’s network of former aides and donors, who are searching for a candidate to back for the first time in more than a decade.”

Then there’s the age factor. Biden is 76-years-old and has even said that questions about his age in 2020 are “totally legitimate,” while O’Rourke, who is 46 years-old, will face no such questions about age.

“I love Joe, but the party needs someone younger,” a former senior Obama administration official told the Hill. “We need someone with new ideas.”

The report comes just days after the Associated Press reported that senior Biden advisers have been contemplating naming O’Rourke as Biden’s running mate to alleviate concerns about Biden’s age.

Recent polling has Biden leading the ever-growing field of potential Democratic presidential candidates, but those same polls have shown O’Rourke gaining ground as his national profile increases.
