Report: DCCC Advised Candidates to Not Discuss Gun Control After Vegas Shooting

A leaked email sent by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) last October shows the committee advised Democratic candidates in the northeast U.S. not to discuss gun control following the mass shooting in Las Vegas last year.

“You and your candidate will be understandably outraged and upset, as will your community. However, DO NOT POLITICIZE IT TODAY,” Evan Lukaske, the DCCC regional press secretary, wrote. “There will be time for politics and policy discussion, but any message today should be on offering thoughts/prayers for victims and their families, and thanking 1st responders who saved lives.”

The email, which was obtained by the Huffington Post, can be viewed in its entirety below:

“A communications staffer who fails to provide immediate and thoughtful guidance after a national tragedy, based on the best available information at the time, is not doing his job,” Meredith Kelly, the DCCC’s communications director, told the Huffington Post about Lukaske’s email.

The Huffington Post also reported that the DCCC would not comment on whether they sent a similar guidance to candidates following the Parkland, Florida shooting this month.
