REPORT: Democrats’ Generic Ballot Lead Down to 3 Points

Democrats’ lead on the generic ballot has shrunk to just three points, according to a new Politico/Morning Consult poll. The three-point margin is a narrower lead for Democrats than nearly any other poll has shown to date.

The poll, released on the eve of Election Day, couldn’t come at a better time for Republicans. It was conducted from October 30 to November 2.

The Politico/Morning Consult poll published Monday found that 43 percent of registered voters prefer the Democratic candidate in their district, compared to 40 percent who prefer the Republican. Another 18 percent of registered voters are undecided, according to the poll.

According to the RealClearPolitics polling average, Democrats hold a 7.2-point lead over Republicans on the generic ballot. Other polls conducted around the same time showed Democrats with seven-, eight-, and 13-point advantages, for example.

If this poll is accurate, it would show a momentum shift back in the direction of Republicans just before votes are tallied.

Democrats would need to net at least 23 House seats in order to regain control of the chamber.
