Report: Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to Resign

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein reportedly verbally resigned to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly on Monday, according to multiple reports.

Rosenstein, who is overseeing Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, has been a frequent target of President Trump’s Twitter attacks.

A recent New York Times report alleged that Rosenstein, “had discussed the possibility of Cabinet officials invoking the 25th Amendment to remove the president from office last year. Rosenstein and the Justice Department fiercely disputed the story.”

According to Axios:

“Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has verbally resigned to Chief of Staff John Kelly in anticipation of being fired by President Trump, according to a source with direct knowledge. Per a second source with direct knowledge: “He’s expecting to be fired,” so he plans to step down. “

With Rosenstein’s reported resignation, there is speculation that Mueller’s probe is at risk.

“If the rumors of Deputy AG’s Rosenstein’s departure are true, I am deeply concerned that it puts that investigation at risk,” former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe said in a statement.

“There is nothing more important to the integrity of law enforcement and the rule of law than protecting the investigation of Special Counsel Mueller,” McCabe’s statement continued. “I sacrificed personally and professionally to help put the investigation on a proper course and subsequently made every effort to protect it.”
