Report: Dozens of Federal Workers Watching Porn on the Job, Wasting Thousands in Taxpayer Dollars

Most federal employees serve their country with honor, but an NBC Washington investigation revealed that a significant number abuse their access to federal technology.

“The [investigation] revealed at least 50 cases of large-scale or criminal pornography viewing at those 12 agencies since 2015, including several in which employees acknowledged spending large chunks of work days surfing for pornography,” NBC reported.

Employees at entities like Amtrak, the National Archive, and the EPA have repeatedly misused government resources to pursue their own ends, the investigation showed.

Here are some of the worst cases:

  • Porn composed “approximately 30-40 percent” of one EPA employee’s hard drive. The employee was caught viewing porn on “Bring Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day” by a child visiting the office.
  • One FTC employee “admitted to watching too much porn,” searching for explicit material over 26,000 times during his employment.
  • An Amtrak employee’s computer contained over 1,700 explicit images, some labeled “Prime Jail Bait.”
  • Another Amtrak employee, who used a company computer to view pornography, blamed his son for the explicit material. He eventually admitted to viewing the material.
  • Investigators found multiple examples of federal employees using government computers for child pornography. These offenders were properly prosecuted.

Some documents indicated that federal agencies struggled to fire offenders, and many of the employees retired without any real penalty.
