Report: Foreign Hackers Target GOP Senator

Foreign agents reportedly attempted to illicitly access the email accounts of a GOP senator’s campaign this week, sending phishing emails to the campaign accounts of Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA).

The Morning Call reported that Google notified the campaign that “‘actors with ties to a nation-state may be sending exploratory emails’ to the campaign accounts.”

The attack was not successful, and there has not been a similar attack on Toomey’s official office:

Toomey spokesman Steve Kelly confirmed the phishing emails when asked Thursday, and said Google also contacted Toomey’s legislative chief of staff about the potential hacking attempt. There has not been a related attempt aimed at the senator’s legislative email accounts, Kelly said.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), one of Toomey’s colleagues, also revealed last year that foreign hackers attempted to infiltrate his presidential campaign.

The foreign attacks on American cybersecurity appear to be bipartisan, with the cloud of Russian attacks on Democratic infrastructure during the 2016 election still hanging over the country.
