Report: John Kasich May Run for President in 2020 … and Not as a Republican

Gov. John Kasich (R-OH), a former congressman and presidential candidate, is continuing to mull a presidential run in 2020, according to a Friday report from Politico.

Kasich’s flirtation with a run is not surprising, given he has been the subject of such rumors for much of the past year-plus.

What’s new in the Politico report, though, are at least two items:

1) MAY RUN AS AN INDEPENDENT

Kasich may run as an independent, according to “[n]ine Republicans in or close with Kasich’s political operation.”

John Kasich’s inner circle is gearing up for a possible presidential run in 2020 — actively weighing the prospect of a Republican primary challenge to President Donald Trump against the feasibility of a long-shot general election campaign as an independent.

…Kasich’s advisers acknowledge that the legal and fundraising path to a nationwide independent bid is just as forbidding as challenging an incumbent president in a primary.

2) ADVISERS BELIEVE TRUMP MAY NOT RUN

Another surprising element of the Politico story is that some Kasich advisers appear to genuinely believe that Trump may not run for re-election, for any number of reasons.

And there’s one consideration driving their thinking perhaps more than any other: what some of his advisers consider the very real, maybe even likely, possibility that Trump doesn’t run again — by choice or not — or that the president becomes so politically hobbled by late next year that the political landscape fundamentally shifts in Kasich’s favor.

A poll released last year by American Research Group, Inc. (ARG) found that Kasich would have a chance against Trump in a New Hampshire primary. It’s unclear, though, how viable a Kasich primary challenge would be after that.

Kasich has also flirted with a unity ticket in 2020, with moderate Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-CO).
