REPORT: Kamala Harris Shopping Book Deal, 2020 Candidacy

Fully embracing her “rising star” status, freshman Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) is reportedly shopping a book deal and fueling rumors about her White House ambitions in the process.

Harris, who started serving in the Senate in January 2017, has been considered a likely candidate to run for the Democratic nomination in 2020 since she arrived in Washington. Undeterred by her colleagues who view Harris’ step-skipping with a wary eye, Harris is reportedly now taking the necessary step of writing a book:

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), a rising star in the Democratic ranks often spoken about as a potential presidential challenger in 2020, shopped a book to a number of New York publishers as recently as a month ago, The Daily Beast has learned.

According to a copy of the proposal obtained by The Daily Beast, the senator’s working title for the project was “Speaking Truth: Hard Facts and Hope for America’s Future.”

Already an author, Harris wrote “Smart on Crime” in 2009 before she successfully ran to become California’s attorney general.

This time, however, Harris will be casting herself as “a political underdog who has overcome numerous obstacles and expectations,” according to The Daily Beast.

It’s unclear whether Harris’ tale will win over progressive Democrats who view the junior senator from California with an eye of suspicion.

“She’s one of the people the Democratic Party is putting up,” one key grassroots activist who supported Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in 2016 said last year. “In terms of where the progressives live, I don’t think there’s any ‘there’ there.”

She might struggle winning over her own colleagues, too. When a reporter asked Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) about Harris potentially running for the White House in 2020, she replied, “She just got here.” Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Selling books could be an uphill battle if many Sanders Democrats agree with that assessment.
