REPORT: Liberal ‘Dark Money’ Groups Vastly Outspent Similar Conservative Groups in 2018

Issue One, an organization that has advocated for limiting money in politics, released a new report on Wednesday that found that liberal, “dark money” groups vastly outspent their conservative counterparts during the 2018 midterm elections.

The Issue One report found that “dark money” groups spent $150 million during the 2018 midterm election. Liberal groups accounted for 54 percent of that total, while conservative groups accounted for just 31 percent.

“That marked the first time since 2010 that liberal nonprofits outspent conservative ones,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

The biggest spender in the last cycle was the liberal group Majority Forward, which has close ties to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and spent $46 million on ads in “10 competitive Senate races last year.”

“Majority Forward files contributions and election activity in accordance with required federal election law,” J.B. Poersch, a Democratic operative who runs Majority Forward, told the Wall Street Journal.

Since 2010, the four biggest liberal “dark money” groups have spent a combined $127 million “on overtly political ads” in attempts to influence voters.

This report by Issue One flies in the face of Democratic talking points that it is Republicans who exploit “dark money” groups to influence elections and comes at a time when many 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls are pledging to reject such donations.
