Report: N. Korea to Dismantle Major Part of Nuclear Weapons Program May 23-25

A nuclear test site will come crumbling to the ground, according to the Kim Jong-un regime. It's a good-will measure, but can the U.S. trust North Korea?

North Korea began preparations this week to dismantle its major nuclear test site in Punggye-ri, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday morning.

Punggye-ri is a far cry from the capital of Pyongyang – roughly an eight-hour drive – and is somewhat close to Vladivostok, Russia. Still, it’s been the site for most of North Korea’s underground nuclear weapons tests, according to BBC.

The Journal‘s Jonathan Cheng reported:

North Korea has begun to remove buildings from around its nuclear-test site in a step toward dismantling the facility, new satellite imagery shows, as the regime seeks to build trust with the U.S. after declaring its nuclear arsenal complete.

Roughly a week before the Punggye-ri site is set to host international journalists, images from San Francisco-based Planet Labs Inc., captured Monday, showed buildings gone and trucks working in the vicinity.

Time will tell if the destruction of the site will actually happen, or if the measure contributes to denuclearization in North Korea rather than just a measure of good will.

The planned, historic summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is only weeks away. The two leaders are scheduled to meet on June 12 in Singapore.
