REPORT: Nadler Campaign Aide Now Lobbying for ‘Employee of Russia’s Foreign-Propaganda Apparatus’

A campaign aide for House Judiciary Committee Chair Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) is now lobbying for an “employee of Russia’s foreign-propaganda apparatus,” according to a report published by the Daily Beast on Thursday.

The Daily Beast reported:

“Ezra Friedlander is a lobbyist and political consultant who runs outreach to the Orthodox Jewish community of behalf of New York Rep. Jerry Nadler’s campaign. He’s also a public-relations executive, and his newest client is the wife of Kirill Vyshinsky, the head of Russian media outlet RIA Novosti’s Ukrainian arm.”

Vyshinsky was the head of RIA Novosti until he was arrested by Ukrainian officials for treason “after the country’s security services raided RIA Novosti’s offices in Kiev, Ukraine.”

Ukrainian authorities are accusing Vyshinsky of “illegally fomenting support for the Russian annexation of Crimea.”

Vyshinsky’s wife hired Friedlander in November to attempt to secure his release, according to documents filed with the Department of Justice.

In an interview with the Daily Beast on Wednesday, Friedlander painted it as an issue of “press freedom.”

But as the Daily Beast points out, it’s not just the Ukrainian government that is accusing the “Russian media of acting as a propaganda arm of the Kremlin,” it’s also the United States intelligence community, who have called the Russian-owned broadcaster an “integral part of Moscow’s American disinformation campaign in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.”

Nadler, as chair of the House Judiciary Committee, is now leading the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Friedlander told the Daily Beast that he has not “lobbied Nadler on Vyshinsky’s behalf—or on behalf of any other client.”

Given Nadler’s longtime relationship with Friedlander and Nadler’s current investigations into Russian interference, it certainly raises questions about Friedlander’s decision to take on such a controversial client.
