Report: National Big Labor Leaders Go All In for McCaskill

The AFL-CIO, a group synonymous with Big Labor in the U.S., is working in Missouri this summer and fall to defeat ‘right to work’ and bring Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) across the finish line to reelection, St. Louis Public Radio reported on Monday.

Missouri Democrats appear to banking their political future on linking the state’s fight over a “right to work’’ law, known as Proposition A, to the effort to re-elect Missouri’s last remaining Democrats holding statewide office.

…national AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka believes that union and Democratic activists across the state – and the country – will stay energized for both elections.

It’s a risky strategy for McCaskill to be so closely allied with Big Labor, given she’s trying to win reelection on bipartisan credentials. Then again, McCaskill has not shied away from liberal figures in her 2018 campaign; she welcomed ex-President Obama to the state to campaign for her this year.

The AFL-CIO is a “federation of 55 national and international labor unions that represent 12.5 million working men and women.” They have been more closely allied with the likes of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) than moderates like McCaskill in the past, but it looks like the AFL-CIO is all in for McCaskill in 2018.
