Report: North Korea Dismantles Rocket Site

North Korea continued a de-escalation of their nuclear and missile programs in recent weeks with the deconstruction of a critical rocket development site, according to a report from 38 North.

Satellite images shows North Korean construction crews dismantling the Sohae Satellite Launching Station, near the country’s northern border with China. 38 North’s images demonstrate that, by July 22, the regime had totally flattened the test stand used to launch rockets into space.

Other buildings in the images, taken over several days, continue to disappear, while the photographs show no activity at the facility’s fuel depots.

North Korea used the facility to test their ability to launch satellites into space, an important step in the development of their intercontinental ballistic missile systems.

The rapid progression of Pyongyang’s missile program sparked a war of words between the United States and the Kim regime in late 2017. But following a de-escalation of rhetoric, President Trump and Kim Jong-un met in Singapore last month, with Kim offering vague promises regarding the dissembling of North Korea’s weapons programs. The bulldozing of the Sohae facility may be a small step towards fulfilling the promises of that summit.
