Report: ‘Petulant’ de Blasio Thinks New York Media is Biased Against Him

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, in emails released Thursday, has privately expressed the belief that the New York media is out to get him.

Politico’s Laura Nahmias and Sally Goldenberg reported that a “petulant and angry” de Blasio repeatedly lashed out at the New York media’s coverage of his mayoralty.

According to Politico, the mayor expressed an immense amount of anger at reports on his gym visit during a 2015 police crisis, saying, “the news media is pitiful and it’s sad for our city and nation.”

Here’s what he said on various media reports on his policies and work.

  • On a profile in The Atlantic: “Now I HAVE read this and it’s horrible. I strongly advise we avoid profiles from now on, especially from national publications. … We gave her a shitload of time!”
  • On a New York Times story: “What did I say about how disappointing the nyt has become…?”
  • On another New York Times story: “a staggering reminder of the sad state of media that this is how they choose to use space that could be better spent covering real problems for nyers.”
  • On the possibility of the New York Daily News cutting back on reporting: “And that would be good for us, right? Or would that make the [the New York] Post more dominant? Or, conversely, would it hasten the demise of the Post — prob just wishful thinking.”

Are there reporters whom de Blasio does approve? The mayor expressed praise for MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program and The New York Times’ Alex Burns.
