Report: Taxpayers Paid $220K to Cover Suit Against Democrat Rep

Taxpayers paid $220,000 to cover a sexual harassment lawsuit against a current member of Congress when the representative was chairman of an independent agency of the federal government, according to a Roll Call report released Friday.

Roll Call reported on the six-figure settlement to close a case against now-Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL):

The Treasury Department paid $220,000 in a previously undisclosed agreement to settle a lawsuit alleging sexual harassment that involved Florida Democrat Alcee L. Hastings, according to documents obtained by Roll Call.

Winsome Packer, a former staff member of a congressional commission that promotes international human rights, said in documents that the congressman touched her, made unwanted sexual advances, and threatened her job. At the time, Hastings was the chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, where Packer worked.

Hastings has been a member of Congress since 1993.

It’s not the first time in the last month that reporters have revealed that taxpayers covered harassers’ legal bills. In November, NTK Network wrote on reporting that taxpayers in Rep. John Conyers’ (D-MI) district paid $27,000 for his settlement with an ex-employee.
