Report: Trump to Visit Indiana on May 10, Could Put Immediate Pressure on Donnelly

The Indianapolis Star reported on Thursday that President Trump is expected to visit Indiana a few days after Republicans choose a nominee to face vulnerable Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-IN) in the midterm election.

President Trump is planning an election-related trip to Indiana days after the state’s May 8 primary, according to a source with knowledge of the trip.

Trump is expected to be in Indiana Thursday, although the location and other event details are still being finalized, the source said.

The timing of Trump’s trip is likely no accident, and any Trump remarks could both target Donnelly and boost his Republican competitor ahead of what’s expected to be one of the nation’s most expensive and brutal campaigns.

Donnelly has hugged Trump, who won Donnelly’s state handily in the 2016 presidential election, at times in the 2017-18 cycle. But Donnelly also voted against Trump’s signature legislative achievement, tax cuts, and his campaign has attacked Vice President Mike Pence.

Republicans will choose a nominee on Tuesday, May 8. There are three top-tier candidates: Reps. Luke Messer (R-IN) and Todd Rokita (R-IN), and businessman Mike Braun.
