Report: Trump Told North Korea He Was Bringing Otto Warmbier Home

When North Korea waffled on allowing the desperately-ill Otto Warmbier to return to the United States, President Trump didn’t wait for permission from the Kim regime to bring the young American student home, according to a new report from GQ.

The president reportedly learned that Warmbier was in dire need of medical attention, slipping into a coma. He did not wait for negotiations to proceed, as the White House previously had.

Instead, the administration informed the North Koreans it was coming to pick up Warmbier, and that they better have him ready for transport:

When Trump learned of Otto’s condition, he doubled down on the order for Yun to rush to Pyongyang and bring Otto home. The North Koreans were unilaterally informed that an American plane would soon land in Pyongyang and that United States diplomats and doctors would get off. “The president was very invested in bringing Otto home,” said a State Department official who was involved in the case and who was not authorized to speak on the record. “Listening to him deliberate on this, he sounded to me a lot more like a dad.”

Warmbier tragically died days after his return to the United States, spending his last days of a coma in his home country.

President Trump’s clear desire to bring the young student home reflects a trend of seeking to free wrongly-imprisoned Americans across the world. The administration has thus far secured the release of an American family held captive by the Taliban, an American aid worker held in Egypt, and a number of UCLA basketball players imprisoned in China.

He recently called Turkey’s refusal to free American pastor Andrew Brunson a “total disgrace” in a tweet.
