Reports: Trump-Kim Meeting Could Include Talk of Denuclearization

If President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un meet before the end of May, denuclearization in North Korea may be on the agenda.

That was the major breakthrough in planning over the weekend, Bloomberg, CNN, and others reported.

From Bloomberg:

The U.S. has confirmed that Kim Jong Un is willing to talk to President Donald Trump about getting rid of his nuclear weapons, as South Korea claimed when it passed along the North Korean leader’s offer for a historic meeting, according to an administration official.

…The administration official asked not to be identified discussing private deliberations. But the fact that the U.S. has confirmed North Korea’s willingness to even discuss denuclearization is a positive step toward the Trump-Kim meeting actually taking place, and suggests they are communicating directly in preparation for it.

Of course, there are still political, diplomatic, and logistical hurdles to actually holding a Trump-Kim summit. The summit may not happen, when push comes to shove.

That said, if the U.S. can put a denuclearized North within the realm of possibility, it would represent a step toward a major foreign policy win for the president and his team.
