Republican Holds 10-Pt. Lead on Eve of MS-Sen. Runoff as Trump Rallies Await

Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) leads Democrat challenger Rep. Mike Espy (D-MS) by a 10-point margin, according to a poll conducted by RRH Elections last week. That poll showed Hyde-Smith, appointed by Gov. Phil Bryant (R-MS) last year after Sen. Thad Cochran retired, with 54 percent to Espy’s 44 percent.

Hyde-Smith beat Espy on Election day by more than 3,000 votes, but because she was unable to reach 50 percent of the total vote, state law mandated the top two vote-getters head to a runoff election. Conservative radio show host Chris McDaniel served as a spoiler in the race, earning more than 16 percent of the vote and forcing the race into a runoff.

The RRH poll of 684 likely voters was conducted from November 19 to 21 and 23 to 24, with a margin of error of four percentage points.

To boost Hyde-Smith’s chances and help remind Republican voters to once again head to the polls Tuesday, President Donald Trump is hosting rallies for Hyde-Smith Monday afternoon and evening. Trump’s events will take place in Tupelo and Biloxi.

According to Morning Consult’s latest tracking poll of Trump’s favorability by state, the president has a 59-percent approval rating in the state.

Should Hyde-Smith prevail on Tuesday, it would bring Republicans’ total number of senators up to 53.
