Retired Supreme Court Justice Calls for Repeal of 2nd Amendment

Former liberal Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, in a New York Times opinion piece on Tuesday, endorsed a repeal of the Second Amendment, days after anti-gun events across the United States.

Stevens cited the “March for Our Lives” events across the country, praising their action on the issue. But the former justice does not believe they went far enough.

“[T]he demonstrators should seek more effective and more lasting reform. They should demand a repeal of the Second Amendment,” he wrote.

The former justice called the amendment protecting firearm ownership “a relic of the 18th century.”

Stevens objected to the Supreme Court’s 5-4 District of Columbia v. Heller decision, which protected the individual right to own a firearm:

That decision — which I remain convinced was wrong and certainly was debatable — has provided the N.R.A. with a propaganda weapon of immense power. Overturning that decision via a constitutional amendment to get rid of the Second Amendment would be simple and would do more to weaken the N.R.A.’s ability to stymie legislative debate and block constructive gun control legislation than any other available option.

His solution? Stevens would propose a Constitutional amendment to undo a right that has been codified in Constitutional law since the founding of the country.
