Rick Scott Leads Bill Nelson in Yet Another Poll

Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) leads Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) in the competitive U.S. Senate race in the Sunshine State, according to a new CBS News/YouGov poll released Monday.

Scott led Nelson by a five-point margin, according to this poll, 46-41. Just six percent of voters said they were not sure who they would support, and the poll had a 3.5-percent margin of error.

Most Florida voters like the job Scott is doing as governor, he has a 61 percent approval rating among registered voters. In addition to strong support from his own party, most independents approve of the job he’s doing (as do about a third of Democrats). Scott currently leads Nelson among independents. The two are effectively tied among Hispanics.

This is the latest in a series of polls that have shown Scott leading Nelson. Earlier this month, a St. Leo University poll showed Scott leading Nelson 40-34. Another early June poll showed Scott with a one-point lead over Nelson, 40-39, but with a substantial lead over Nelson among the key demographic of seniors in Florida. Scott led Nelson 44-35 among Florida seniors in that poll.

These polls come after a week of terrible headlines for Nelson, who was accused of revoking support for a judge after a super PAC closely aligned with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced it would spend millions on Nelson’s behalf in Florida.

Florida’s primary date is August 28. Nelson’s name will be the only one on the Democratic ballot, while Scott faces nominal opposition from a perennial candidate.
