Democrats in Florida are panicking ahead of the marquee senate race between Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) and Gov. Rick Nelson (R-FL), as Scott is beginning to box out his Democratic rival among Hispanic communities.

According to a Politico report, Scott is hitting the airwaves with Spanish-language advertisements, and the governor has used his office to help displace Puerto Rican populations after the devastation of Hurricane Maria. In fact, Puerto Rico’s lieutenant governor and sole congressional representative endorsed the GOP governor in his race against Nelson.

And a focus group of Floridians of Puerto Rican origin barely knew who the Democratic incumbent was:

For Democrats who recognize protecting Nelson’s seat is essential to their hopes of winning a Senate majority this fall, the veteran senator’s lackluster outreach to one of the fastest-growing voting blocs in the nation’s largest swing state is causing alarm.

The depth of Nelson’s troubles — and Scott’s advantage — came into sharp focus last month in four focus groups conducted in Central Florida’s influential Puerto Rican community, where few knew who Nelson was, despite his three Senate terms and holding elected Florida office for 41 years.

Democratic operatives said that a “disconnect” between the Hispanic community and Nelson existed, and the Democratic senator is doing nothing to bridge that divide.

In a state as diverse as Florida, Nelson’s refusal to reach out to the Hispanic community, particularly the Puerto Rican communities in Central Florida, could sink his candidacy.
