Rick Scott Raises a Truckload of Money for Senate Campaign in Q2

Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) reportedly raised $10.7 million in his first full quarter as a Senate candidate, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

The impressive haul will help Scott, who launched his campaign in April, pull even in the money race with the man he’s hoping to replace, Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL). Nelson has not reported his second-quarter fundraising numbers, but at the end of Q1 he had $10.5 million in the bank.

The Tampa Bay Times’ Steve Bosquet has more on Scott’s fundraising numbers:

The haul included support from more than 11,000 contributors, 80 percent of whom live in Florida, Scott’s campaign announced, and that more than 75 percent of all contributors gave less than $500.

Those numbers, highlighted in a Scott campaign news release, are meant to counter a Democratic narrative that the Republican governor is backed by a long line of out-of-state business interests.

Another important note: none of the money raised by Scott in Q2 came from his own personal wealth, which is considerable. Scott did contribute to his gubernatorial campaigns in 2010 and 2014.

Scott announced his Senate bid just three weeks before the Q1 reporting period ended, earlier this year. At that time, he had raised $3.2 million – the same amount raised by Nelson in a three-month period. That quarter marked Nelson’s best fundraising quarter ever.
