The recount proved to be a tremendous waste of time, but it showed once and for all that the Republicans earned more votes than the Democrats.

Republicans Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis defeated their Democratic opponents in races for Senate and governor, respectively, after officials finished hand-counting votes Sunday afternoon.

Before the hand recount, Scott led Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) by about 12,600 votes. After the hand recount, officials declared Scott the winner by about 10,000 votes. The ultimate result was of little surprise to analysts, who routinely noted since Election Day that recounts rarely result in massive swings in vote totals.

Still, that didn’t stop Nelson from trying every tactic available to him to squeak out the win.

Nelson, his lawyers and his allies had predicted that the three-term incumbent would pick up thousands of new votes in the hand recount, pointing especially to roughly 23,000 outstanding ballots in Broward that they hoped would push Nelson across the finish line.

Marc Elias, the lead recount lawyer for Nelson, claimed for days that Nelson was likely to make sweeping gains in a hand recount. But he acknowledged last week in a call with reporters that the senator would need more than one “silver bullet” in his bid for a fourth term in Washington.

The Florida governor’s race ended a day earlier when Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum called DeSantis to concede. The governor-elect called on Floridians to come together after a “hard-fought campaign.”

Gillum conceded to DeSantis on election night, but withdrew it when slow-counting Democrat-heavy counties continued counting ballots and the race started tightening.
