Former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) is one step closer to the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, after a definitive 43-point victory in the GOP primary for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT).

Romney earned 217,049 votes from Utah Republicans on Tuesday — 71.7 percent of the vote — to Mike Kennedy’s 85,622 votes (28.3 percent).

Romney earned an even higher proportion of the vote, 76.2 percent, in Salt Lake County, where he successfully steered Salt Lake City through the challenges of hosting the Winter Olympics in 2002.

As NTK Network noted Tuesday morning, Romney is widely expected to defeat his Democratic opponent, Jenny Wilson, in deep-red Utah this November. The last poll of the race had Romney up 60 percent to 14 percent.
