Romney Weighs In on 2020

Former two-time presidential candidate and current U.S. Senate candidate Mitt Romney was asked about the 2020 presidential election in an MSNBC interview out Sunday.

The GOP nominee for retiring Sen. Orrin Hatch’s (R-UT) seat did not rule out either supporting or opposing President Trump’s reelection effort in 2020.

“Will you vote for President Trump in 2020?” MSNBC’s Kasie Hunt asked Romney. “You said you think he’s gonna get reelected.”

Romney refused to give a definitive answer, and even compared the race (unfavorably) to the California gubernatorial election.

“It’s too early to say who I will support,” Romney said. “Yeah, I did say I think he’ll get reelected. That’s not an endorsement. I mean, I also think that Gavin Newsom will get elected in California. That’s not something I want to see, it’s just something that’s probably gonna happen.”

As NTK Network noted last month, Romney has pledged to Utahns that he will support the president’s policies when they’re good for the state and will criticize the president when he feels compelled by conscience to do so.

If you elect me your senator, I will fight with vigor for the interests of our state and nation. I will endorse the president’s policies that support those interests. Hopefully, there will be few occasions where I will be compelled by conscience to criticize. But, as I have said throughout this campaign, I will call them like I see them. Last week, the president said that I’m a straight shooter; I will endeavor to be just so.

Romney faces Democrat Jenny Wilson in the fall.
