Rosenstein Blasts Comey for Becoming a ‘Partisan Pundit’

Former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein blasted former FBI Director James Comey for becoming a “partisan pundit” and claimed that Comey crossed certain “bright lines” while speaking at the Greater Baltimore Committee’s annual meeting on Monday.

According to Politico:

“Rosenstein, who authored the memo that the Trump administration initially held up as the reason for Comey’s firing, said that the president did not tell him what to put in that memo. And he said that though he didn’t dislike Comey — “On the contrary, I admired him personally,” Rosenstein said — the former FBI director crossed certain “bright lines” that were “not within the realm of reasonable decisions.”

“I would be the last one to condemn anyone for a judgment call,” Rosenstein said. “These jobs are difficult. They involve choices that invite criticism.”

Rosenstein went on to say that Comey’s “clearest mistake” as FBI director was his decision to publicly announce his personal recommendation regarding the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of state.

As for President Trump’s firing of Comey, Rosenstein said that if he had been in President Trump shoes, he would have carried out the dismissal with “far more respect and far less drama.”

Comey learned of his firing from news reports on TV while on a work-related trip in Los Angeles.

“So I do not blame the former director for being angry. I would be too if I were in his shoes,” Rosenstein said. “But now the former director seems to be acting as a partisan pundit, selling books and earning speaking fees while speculating about the strength of my character and the fate of my immortal soul. I kid you not.”
