Rubio: Surveillance of Carter Page ‘Justified’

The Florida senator said that Page was an unimportant member of the Trump campaign, but intelligence properly surveilled the alleged Russian asset.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday that intelligence officials properly obtained a FISA warrant to monitor Trump campaign associate Carter Page, and that surveillance was “justified.”

The Department of Justice released the FISA warrant application, which undermined a number of key claims in the Nunes memo, on Saturday evening.

“Even before the campaign, [Page is] a guy that went around the world, bragging about his connections in Russia,” Rubio said.

The Florida senator explained that Page’s “gravitating” around the Trump campaign prompted intelligence agencies to follow Page’s actions. However, Rubio doubted that surveillance of Page equated with spying on the Trump campaign.

“By the Trump campaign’s own admission, Carter Page was not a big player in their campaign,” he said. “I don’t believe that them looking in Carter Page means they were spying on the campaign.”

Rubio added that it also does not prove anything regarding the “collusion” narrative.
