Russia Blocks Independent Investigation of Syrian Chemical Attack at UN

The Russians used their veto power to stop the UN from investigating the attack on Syrian civilians.

At a special session on the UN Security Council on Tuesday, the Russian Federation vetoed a resolution establishing an independent investigation into the Syrian chemical attack that occurred last weekend.

All members of the 15-member security council voted for the resolution except Russia, China, and Bolivia. China abstained.

No resolution can pass with a negative vote from a permanent member, and Russia’s negative vote scuttled the effort.

Prior to the vote, the Russian ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, signaled they would oppose the investigation.

The United States called the session to identify the actors behind the atrocity, and Canada, France, the Netherlands, Peru, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Turkey helped America introduce the resolution.
