Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) seemed to endorse House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to be the next House GOP leader during his weekly press conference on Thursday.

Ryan announced that he would be retiring from politics at the end of his term on Wednesday, leaving many to speculate which Republican will replace Ryan as the leader of congressional Republicans.

There is speculation that both McCarthy and Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) will seek the top job.

A reporter asked Ryan about a small group of Republicans who think Ryan should step down as speaker now, so that Republicans can focus on the 2018 midterm election.

“I’ve said all along my plan is to stay here and run through the tape,” Ryan said. “I’ve talked to a lot of members, a lot of members, who think it’s in all of our best interests for this leadership team to stay in place.”

“I was encouraged that Steve Scalise this morning said that he thinks that after the election, that Kevin McCarthy ought to be the person to replace me after the elections,” Ryan said. “I think that’s encouraging because what it shows you is that we have an intact leadership team.”
