Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) admitted that under his Medicare for All proposal that Americans would be paying more in taxes and that the plan would eliminate private health insurance in America during an interview with ABC News Des Moines on Sunday.

A reporter asked Sanders about whether it was possible under his plan for people who like their private health insurance to keep it under his plan.

“No,” Sanders said. “Right now, what we should appreciate is that every year, man,y many millions of people lose their health insurance because they leave jobs or because their employer changes their insurance policies.”

“There is no reason why we should continue to pay twice as much per capita for health care than do the people of any other nation, and yet have so many people uninsured or underinsured with high deductibles,” Sanders said. “So, I believe that if we want to provide health care to all in a cost-effective way, if we want to lower the outrageous price of prescription drugs in this country, the way to go is Medicare for All.”

The reporter followed up by asking Sanders how America would pay for his Medicare for All proposal.

“Well, we’re paying for it right now. We’re spending twice as much per capita on health care as do the people of any another country,” Sanders said. “What people should understand is what Medicare for All does is it eliminates your private health insurance premiums, you’re not going to be paying that. You’re going to be paying copayments, you’re not going to be paying deductibles. You’re going to be seeing your prescription drug cost in my view come down by 50 percent.”

“Will you be paying more in taxes? Yes, you will,” Sanders said.
