Sarah Sanders Just Walked Back Pretty Much Everything Trump Said About Guns

According to the White House press secretary, Trump no longer supports universal background checks and raising the age limit to buy firearms.

Just days after a blockbuster bipartisan meeting at the White House to discuss gun safety measures, the administration appears to be reversing course on a number of key issues.

ABC News Jonathan Karl reportedly spoke to White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders Friday morning after a meeting President Trump took with National Rifle Association (NRA) chief lobbyist Chris Cox. Here’s how the two described the meeting on Twitter:

During the bipartisan meeting on Wednesday, Trump articulated support for strengthening background checks and banning assault weapons, and opposition to concealed carry reciprocity (state to state) and “due process” for suspected criminals who own guns.

The NRA called Trump’s remarks “great TV,” but “bad policy” on Thursday.

By Friday, Sanders was telling reporters that Trump does not support universal background checks for gun purchases. She also said that Trump “conceptually” supports raising the minimum age to buy a firearm to 21, but believes that is an issue best left to individual states.

Close Trump observers will note these walk-backs are similar to those made by the White House after Trump’s bipartisan meeting on immigration in January. Is it a designed strategy to get both sides of the debate talking? Time will tell on the gun issue, but no resolution has been reached on immigration to date.
