Saudi Crown Prince: Israel Has a Right to Exist

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, speaking with The Atlantic this week, signaled a change in the Sunni world’s approach to Israel. The heir apparent to the Saudi throne told the magazine that he believes the Jews have a “right” to their ancestral homeland.

Given his father’s old age, Salman has become the de facto leader of Saudi Arabia, jailing potential rivals for the throne and modernizing Saudi society.

The prince is now apparently leading an Arab coalition in modernizing the Middle East’s foreign policy:

Another key—though sub rosa—member of Prince Mohammed’s alliance is Israel, a country about which Prince Mohammed did not have a bad word to say. In fact, when I asked him whether he believed the Jewish people have a right to a nation-state in at least part of their ancestral homeland, he said: “I believe that each people, anywhere, has a right to live in their peaceful nation. I believe the Palestinians and the Israelis have the right to have their own land.”

Salman’s statement, seemingly an endorsement of the two-state solution, was a huge step toward acceptance of Israel in the Arab world. An expert on Middle East peace told The Atlantic that no Arab leader, even moderates, had ever endorsed an Israeli “right” to the land.
