Schumer Expresses Displeasure That Every State Gets Two Senators

"Is it going to be easy? No, it never is in the Senate because the rural states get the same number of Senators as the urban - the bigger states," Schumer said.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-CA) appeared to express displeasure that rural states in America have the same number of senators as more “urban states,” during an interview with WAMC’s Alan Chartock on Tuesday.

Chartock asked Schumer what he thought the Democrats’ chances were of regaining control of the Senate in 2020.

Schumer explained why it was so important for Democrats to retake control of the Senate because “Mitch McConnell will block everything the new Democratic president tries to do,” and McConnell could block any presidential appointment to the Supreme Court.”

“So, it’s vital to take back the Senate,” Schumer said. “I hope there’ll be a rallying cry. Last time in the election it was, ‘Take back the House.’ We needed it, it was easier to take back the House than take back the Senate, given the Senate map.”

Schumer then explained that the 2020 Senate map was much easier for Democrats because there is only one Democratic senator running in a state Trump won in 2016, as opposed to the 10 who ran in 2018.

“Is it going to be easy? No, it never is in the Senate because the rural states get the same number of senators as the urban – the bigger states,” Schumer said.

Schumer’s remark comes at a time when 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls are proposing doing away cornerstones of America’s democracy like the electoral college and packing the Supreme Court.
