Schumer: “I Think Most of [Senate Dems] Are Following Me” in Refusing to Meet With Kavanaugh

The Senate minority leader is puffing his chest on his refusal to even meet with Judge Brett Kavanaugh. Will vulnerable Senate Democrats 'follow' Schumer?

Schumer: “I Think Most of [Senate Dems] Are Following Me” in Refusing to Meet With Kavanaugh

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is apparently feeling confident about his refusal to meet with Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s nominee to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court.

“I have told my caucus that I’m waiting, and I think most of them are following me,” Schumer told The New York Times on Monday.

Schumer is mostly correct, as of right now. Ironically, the news came as Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) became the first Senate Democrat to announce a meeting with Kavanaugh, which will take place July 30.

Still, Schumer’s chest-puffing moment proves a challenge for vulnerable Democrats up for reelection in states Trump won in 2016: do they cross Schumer, the powerful Senate Democrat leader, or their constituents, many of whom want to see their senators at least meet with Kavanaugh?

Sens. Joe Donnelly (D-IN), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), Bill Nelson (D-FL), Jon Tester (D-MT) and Claire McCaskill (D-MO) are among those on the hot seat.

Will they follow Schumer, or will they meet with Judge Kavanaugh? Time will tell, but these senators’ constituents may not be quite as patient as Schumer.
