During a press conference in the Capitol on Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) repeatedly refuted the idea that Judge Brett Kavanaugh, the man picked by President Trump to serve on the Supreme Court and accused of sexual misconduct, deserves the presumption of innocence.

A reporter asked Schumer if he agreed with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who said he believes Kavanaugh deserves the presumption of innocence. Further, she asked if Schumer views the Supreme Court nominating process through the prism of a legal proceeding.

“No, it’s not a legal proceeding. It’s a fact-finding proceeding,” he said. “We do this with every major nominee.”

Schumer then added that if Christine Blasey Ford’s accusations are true, Kavanaugh’s “credibility is in great question.”

The reporter then followed up, asking for clarity on her question about the presumption of innocence for Kavanaugh.

“What I believe is we ought to get to the bottom and find the facts in the way that the FBI has always done,” a clearly agitated Schumer said. “There’s no presumption of innocence or guilt when you have a nominee before you.”
