Schumer vs. Schumer on Supreme Court Nominations

The Senate minority leader is changing his tune on the questions Supreme Court nominees should face.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced, in a speech on the Senate floor on Tuesday, that he expects Judge Brett Kavanaugh to offer specifics on various potential cases to senators considering his confirmation.

“Judge Kavanaugh in his meetings with senators today, and the days ahead, has a responsibility, a responsibility not to duck, not to hide behind false legal shibboleths,” he said.

Listing a number of key issues, Schumer described Kavanaugh as a “crucial vote” on the concerns facing Americans. Therefore, he explained, he’s expecting Kavanaugh to get specific on his views on potential cases.

But in 2017, the Senate minority leader said something very different.

“You can’t ask a judge who was nominated for or a potential judge who was nominated for a judgeship about a specific case that might come before them,” Schumer told reporters at a February 2017 press conference.

Now, with President Trump’s second nominee, Schumer is apparently reversing his position in a desperate partisan gamble to stop Kavanaugh’s nomination.
