Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) suggested that if Democrats retake both chambers of Congress following the 2018 midterm elections, they will impeach President Trump following Trump’s press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.

A reporter asked Schumer what Democrats could do to be a check on Trump, citing how some people including former CIA Director John Brennan have suggested impeaching Trump and why Democrats don’t just take the gavel and do this.

“We don’t have the power to take the gavel. We don’t have the gavel,” Schumer said. “The best thing we can do is first speak truth to power. Silence here is not acceptable. And the second thing we can do is try in every way we can to get the Congress to act, which requires our Republican colleges to act with us.”

In the past, Schumer has distanced himself from Democrats calling for Trump’s impeachment, saying that Democrats should wait until Special Counsel Robert Mueller concluded his investigation.
