Schumer Won’t Commit to Keeping the Filibuster If Dems Retake Control of the Senate

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer would not commit to keeping the filibuster if Democrats retake control of the Senate in 2020 during a press conference on Thursday.

Several Senate Democrats running for president in 2020 have said they would support eliminating the Senate filibuster if elected. Though to be clear, as president, none of these Democrats would have any formal power to eliminate the filibuster in the legislative branch’s Senate.

A reporter asked Schumer on Thursday if he would support such a move if Democrats retake control of the Senate in 2020.

“I’ve always said in terms of the rules and these things, let’s first win the majority, then we’ll make the decisions and the caucus will come together,” Schumer said.
