Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), in a video posted to Twitter on Tuesday, announced that he will retire in 2018. The announcement opens the door for a possible Senate run by former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

“After much prayer and discussion with family and friends, I’ve decided to retire at the end of this term. Although I will miss serving you in the Senate, I look forward to spending more time with my family,” Hatch told the camera.

The senator drew on his amateur boxing experience to provide a metaphor for his coming retirement.

“Every good fighter knows when to hang up the gloves,” he said.

Romney has explored the possibility of a Senate bid if the three-decade-plus senator retired. Now that Hatch’s departure from the chamber is coming to pass, it’s likely the former GOP presidential candidate and Massachusetts governor will run for the seat.
