Senate Candidate Listens as Bernie Supporters Chant ‘Medicare For All,’ Which She Doesn’t Support

Jacky Rosen is on record opposing "Medicare For All," which made it awkward when Bernie Sanders' supporters chanted for the single-payer proposal at a rally with Rosen and Sanders on Thursday.

Rep. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) is trying to balance her progressive views with a purple-state electorate as she challenges Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV) in 2018, and nowhere was that need to balance more clear, or more awkward, than in Las Vegas on Thursday night.

Before introducing Sanders, a democratic socialist, Rosen, a self-styled bipartisan bridge-builder who also claims to be progressive, gave a short stump speech in front of a crowd of hundreds.

At one point, she turned to her signature issue: health care.

“We are voting to ensure that every single Nevadan and every single American has access to quality, affordable health care,” Rosen said in the stump speech.

Supporters cheered as Rosen awkwardly added, “you’ve only got one body, right?” But then the crowd of Sanders supporters started chanting “Medicare For All.” Rosen smiled politely before continuing with her speech.

Why was it awkward for Rosen? Well, for one, Rosen doesn’t support “Medicare For All.”

Perhaps it was also awkward, though, because Rosen realized the crowd was more jazzed about Sanders and his proposals than her or her campaign. At least one reporter made this observation on Thursday night.
