Former Gov. Phil Bredesen (D-TN) shared some news in a U.S. Senate debate in Tennessee on Tuesday night: he won’t vote for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to lead Senate Democrats, if he’s elected this year.

Politico reported:

“We need to get new leadership. I can tell you right now that if I’m elected, and when I’m elected and go to Washington, I am not going to be voting for Chuck Schumer,” Bredesen said.

However, Schumer allies have spent millions of dollars to help elect Bredesen in Tennessee. It’s clear why: if Bredesen wins, that seat will flip from Republican (incumbent Sen. Bob Corker is retiring) to Democratic.

Early in his campaign for U.S. Senate, Bredesen even appeared to welcome that kind of outside spending in the race. At an event in Smithville in February, Bredesen said, “[o]ne of the advantages of a Senate race like this is there will be a lot of money spent from the outside.”

Bredesen may pledge his independence during the campaign, where he’s fighting an uphill battle in a red state. If and when he gets to Washington, D.C., though, it may be hard to buck Schumer, after the powerful minority leader helped Bredesen win a U.S. Senate seat.
