Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) Chair, Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), said that Senate Democrats running in 2018 would “welcome support” from former President Bill Clinton and twice-failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Thursday.

“We welcome support from everybody who wants to help, including Secretary Clinton and President Obama,” Van Hollen said during a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.

Van Hollen’s statement that the DSCC would welcome the support of Hillary Clinton might surprise some people, given that 10 Senate Democrats who are running for reelection in 2018 are competing in states that Clinton lost to Donald Trump in 2016.

Trump defeated Clinton by double digits in states like West Virginia, North Dakota, Montana, and Missouri. Each of those states has a Democrat senator running for reelection in 2018.

A reporter asked Van Hollen specifically if the DSCC would welcome the support of Bill Clinton.

“Yes,” Van Hollen said. “As the head of the DSCC, we welcome those individuals and everybody that wants to help.”

Van Hollen’s support for Bill Clinton might be even more surprising, given the popularity of the #MeToo movement and the past allegations Clinton has faced from multiple women alleging the former president sexually harassed or sexually assaulted them.
