Josh Mandel, Ohio’s state treasurer and leading GOP candidate to take on Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), announced on Friday that he was ending his bid for Senate due to his wife’s health issues.

The candidate announced to his supporters via email that he would continue to serve as state treasurer until the end of his term, but he would not be the GOP nominee to face Brown.

Per The Washington Post:

In an email to supporters, the Republican cited an unspecified health issue his wife is battling as the reason for his decision.

“Understanding and dealing with this health issue is more important to me than any political campaign,” Mandel wrote. “For as long as that takes, whether it is months or years, it is important that I heed my dad’s advice and be there for my wife and our kids.”

Mandel said he would continue to serve out the rest of his term as state treasurer.

Mandel’s exit leaves an opening for other candidates to jump in the 2018 race.
