"They used airplanes into towers, now people can use the click of a computer key in St. Petersburg, Russia to attack."

Sen. Angus King (I-ME) compared the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 to the Russian hackers accused of interfering in the 2016 presidential election during a 9/11 remembrance event in Lewiston, Maine on Tuesday.

“That was, I would argue, the beginning of an attack that’s continuing today. They used airplanes into towers, now people can use the click of a computer key in St. Petersburg, Russia to attack,” King said. “It’s an attack that continues and it’s the same kind of attack today that occurred in 2001.”

“I am appalled that Angus King, on today of all days, compared the brutal terrorist attacks of 9/11 and the murder of over 3,000 innocent Americans to Russian computer hackers,” said Eric Braley, a Republican Senate candidate challenging King. “The two things are simply incomparable, and reflect the deranged thinking of Angus and his liberal allies.”

“Sen. King’s crass statements are an insult to the victims, their families and our first responders,” Braley’s statement read. “King should retract his statement immediately and apologize for his shameful remark.”

King is an independent but caucuses with Democrats in the Senate.
