Senators on ‘Medicare Buy-In’ Bill a Who’s Who of Possible 2020 Candidates

On Wednesday, Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Chris Murphy (D-CT) introduced the “Choose Medicare Act,” a ‘Medicare buy-in’ bill that some will see as a third way between the current health care system and Bernie Sanders-backed single-payer.

Indeed, Merkley and Murphy, in simultaneous statements, framed the bill as a step to universal health care, with the added belief that the Medicare plan will be more “affordable” and “efficient” than private health insurance.

The bill would have Medicare compete with private insurance companies, and take a number of steps to “[improve] affordability” of health care (without a clearly-described plan, it seems, to pay for improved affordability).

More importantly to the political conversation, though, the sponsor and cosponsor lists for the bill are practically a who’s who of Senate Democrats potentially seeking the presidency in 2020.

They are:

  • Merkley, who just confirmed interest in running for president, according to The Hill
  • Murphy, who Politico reported may be building a “campaign war [chest]” to run in 2020
  • Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), long rumored to be considering a run
  • Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), who’s positioning for 2020 on the subject of campaign finance reform
  • Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), who’s doing the same as Booker

Some of the possible Senate Democrats running in 2020 not on the cosponsor list? Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who supports single-payer, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), a far-left senator and Sanders ally.
