Attorney General Jeff Sessions trashed the law enforcement policies of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) while speaking to federal officers in Georgia on Monday morning.

The attorney general cited the example of Chicago, which saw a large increase in violent crime following a successful ACLU lawsuit that limited the ability of police to enforce the law. Sessions referenced a study from the University of Utah as the source for his statistics.

“They found that homicides in Chicago went from 480 in 2015 to 754 in 2016, [a] 57 percent increase [in] just one year,” he said. “[The Utah researchers] directly pinpointed, from their analysis, the 57-percent increase to the abrupt decline of stop-and-frisk that occurred in late 2015.”

Sessions explained that protests following a police shooting and an ACLU lawsuit killed the ability of law enforcement officers to stop crime. According to Sessions, arrests and stops fell prior to the surge in homicides. He cited the researchers’ description of this trend as “the ACLU effect.”

“If you want crime to go up, it’s easy – let people like the ACLU run the criminal justice system,” the attorney general added, pledging the Trump administration would work to reduce crime.
