Sexual Harassment Scandal Squashes SEIU’s Annual Black Friday Protests

Over the past several years, the SEIU’s Fight for 15 campaign has used Black Friday to protest major retailers annually. That won’t be the case this year.

In addition to deals at major retail outlets, Black Friday shoppers have also come to expect the presence of protesters at major retail outlets across the country. Over the past several years, the SEIU’s Fight for 15 campaign has used the day-after Thanksgiving shopping specials to protest major retailers annually.

As the SEIU is preoccupied with a sexual harassment scandal, this year may prove different. Five top SEIU officials have resigned or been fired in the past several months, including the Chief Strategist for the Fight for 15 Campaign Scott Courtney, as well as the Organizing Director for Fight 15, Kendall Fells. Abusive behavior by top-level organizers were an “open secret” amongst SEIU staff, according to reports.

Perhaps as a result of the scandal and the turnover of leadership, Fight for 15 has no protests planned for this year’s Black Friday, despite going so far in the past to organize a more than two-week-long fast in conjunction with the one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

The absence of one of their largest annual protests indicates the extent to which the sexual harassment scandal has embroiled the SEIU, a union that claims to advocate for worker protections against workplace sexual harassment and assault. The SEIU represents a majority-female workforce
